Juglans Nigra: American Black Walnut Ink
Walnut ink has a rich golden brown colour that stands out in paintings, it is made from the fragrant green husk surrounding the nut, it is water soluble, lightfast, acid-free, natural and non toxic.
walnuts have an ancient history of cultivation and mythological significance. The oldest walnut shell remains were found in the Proto Neolithic Shanidar caves of Northern Iraq and in many neolithic sites across France. Greek and Roman writings tell of applications for walnuts covering all aspects of life and health. While there is no traceable recorded history of black walnut use among the peoples of North America, archeological finds suggest the cultivation of walnut trees for a few thousands years for use as a food, medicine and dye extractions.
Rembrandt, Leonardo Da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh are just a few of the artists that have used walnut ink in their drawings.
